Sandstone Peak Trailhead to Ray Miller Trailhead

This western end of the Backbone Trail – with its rugged ridges and unforgettable scenery – is truly one of Santa Monica Mountains’ most spectacular landscapes. This challenging yet rewarding hike will take travelers through its deepest wilderness, to the top of its highest peak, and closest to the crashing waves of the Pacific.

Adventurers who scramble to the top of Sandstone Peak have a 360-degree vantage point of the entire mountain range and beyond – from the distant peaks and endless canyons that border civilization to the miles of the Pacific Ocean and the Channel Islands in the horizon. The remote and pristine Boney Mountain Wilderness boasts jagged cliffs, fascinating hoodoos, and volcanic outcroppings that jut out of the chaparral-covered highlands.

Hikers will voyage past the widest variety of environmental zones that can be experienced in the Santa Monica Mountains: a fragile alpine environment leads into a thick mountain of foliage; low chaparral becomes rolling grasslands; a sparse desert-like region turns into a sycamore and grass savannah; blooming yucca and coastal scrub beckons travelers to the windswept bluffs directly above the sea. The fresh ocean breeze and the sound of crashing waves echoing throughout the canyon walls welcome adventurers to their final destination along the beautiful Southern Californian coastline.

The Woolsey Fire burned roughly 30 miles of the Backbone Trail and devastated more acres within the Santa Monica Mountains than any other fire in recorded history. This section of the Backbone Trail has unfortunately been impacted and continues to heal and regrow. The Trail Magic Adventures’ team has been donating funds along with man-power to help rebuild the many trail systems and communities that have been destroyed. We appreciate your patience and understanding during this time of renewal and restoration. If you would like to help in the recovery effort, please visit the Santa Monica Mountains Trails Council and the SAMO Fund to look at volunteer opportunities.
